They probably don't want to help you. I think they've probably stricken those products from their database entirely as a means of forcing people to buy newer computers. They are probably withholding information for that self-same purpose: they don't want people fixing their machines.

It's a collective behavior so it can't be typed. However whoever made it the strategy definitely felt they had limited responsibility to the people. Maybe someone along the lines of Citizen Kane, or if you prefer, the mayor in Jaws.
Or the Enron people.
I call them "object moralists", because they are totally upfront and committed to those they know, but are suspicious, frightful of, and duplicitous towards those they don't. As a general rule, these are the deal makers who organize big mergers between companies even as they lobby Congress to look the other way as they destroy the environment.
