Awesome list! I loved the original Wizardry, and Might and Magic 4-5 gave me many hours of enjoyment back in high school.

Planescape was a great game despite the shittiest combat engine I've ever seen in a RPG. Baldur's Gate was just a huge pile of shit: same shitty combat engine, more emphasis on combat, and none of the things that made Planescape great. |
I too loved Planescape Torment and couldn't stand the original Baldur's Gate (in spite of my love for Minsc). Didn't even finish it--it bored me that much. But as Torment clearly took after Baldur's Gate in many respects, Baldur's Gate was probably the right choice for the list.

You know, I never finished BG, either (though I think I finished the three "modules" of the expansion).
BG2, however, I *loved*. One of my favorite games of all time. _________________ Tales of the Rampant Coyote - Old-School Game Developer talks Indie Games, RPGs, and the Games Biz

Interesting. What about BG2 was so good in comparison to the original? Did they open up the game world more? Make gameplay less dependent on highly randomized combat?

Really good question, and it's been so long I'm not positive I remember the answer.
I seem to remember getting lost a lot in BG1. A lot of wandering around getting into random combats, trying to figure out where I should go next. It was fun just exploring a bit, but it got old ofter a while. (I should re-install it and try again).
I don't remember that happening in BG2. It seemed like there was something happening on every street corner. I had quests coming out the wazoo, and I didn't have to go too far before I'd pick up the next thread.
In short, the world seemed *full*.
The story was only so-so, but it was still a lot better than BG1. _________________ Tales of the Rampant Coyote - Old-School Game Developer talks Indie Games, RPGs, and the Games Biz
