Hm.. This is a quaint community, even if it does seem a little quiet. But this'll possibly guarantee nicer people, yes? I find that bigger forums are a lot more intimidating and have a lot meaner people. D:

Anyhow.. Um, I recently begun digging into these sorts of games, and I love how a bunch of 'em have that old game feel to them - like Ultima 6 or 7. <3
In particular, Diver Down, which I've just recently begun to play. I've played a few before, but they really haven't quite caught my attention as much as this game and I'm determined to finish this one. :]

Okay, now, I'm going to get shot for asking this first question, but... Is it essential to get the bluebird's egg? Or is this a side quest? If it is essential, I'd like to know of a side quest other than gathering herbs for the old woman, 'cause I'm trying to raise money, and killing for money is tedious. I got a decent amount of money from the old woman, but it wasn't enough unfortunately, 'cause I used some of it for supplies without realizing I could've used that money elsewhere - like buying my way into the elf lady's house.. Stupid bird. >.>;

Now that the worst is over with, I can ask the question I won't get shot for. Verge is what the designer used, right? Is the site temporarily down, or do they have a new site? I tried getting on there to see if I could fiddle with the program..
Also, what differences would I see between Visual Basic and the Verge engine? Are they basically the same or what?
I'm pretty new at programming game stuff and I've been on and off with it, so I'm just a little curious. :]

Hm. I guess it was more than two questions... ^^;

It's cool Diver Down has gotten so much attention. I haven't played it, but I have seen a lot of questions about it here. Because of that, some members get irritated with newcomers hoping we're an interactive walkthrough. You might want to search the net a bit more on this, since it's a popular game.

The author sometimes comes around here though, so you might get lucky.

Yikes, I'm sorry. >< I was hoping my question wouldn't come off that way...

I was actually more curious about the small community here and wanted to know more about what the author used to make the game. :]

I haven't played DD in a good while (It's one of those games I like to indulge in every few years and fully enjoy it), but I believe the bluebird egg is an essential item. I also remember gathering plants for the woman was kinda tedious, but it's the best way to make money at that stage in the game. Once you pick out the few different-colored pixels on the plants you need to harvest it gets pretty easy (but still unavoidably tedious, unfortunately).

Note that the game gets a lot less tedious after the Emil segment, though. You're in for a real treat; despite being pretty raw in presentation, Diver Down has one of the best stories I've seen in any game. See it through to the end and it will be worth it. :)

EDIT: And yep, it was created in Verge. I've never actually used it so I couldn't tell you how similar it may or may not be to VB's interface.

Wasn't Diver Down made in one of the RPG Maker programs? I don't know for sure.

Augh. I hate birds. They make things difficult. :c
Yea, I got the money from the plants, but I don't think they respawn, which makes me a little sad, hahaha. Call me crazy if you'd like, but I actually liked gathering the plants. I just feel bad because there's a little girl with a fever and there are no leaves for me to harvest. :[ I'm a bleeding heart. It must be the estrogen. :P
But yes, I've heard great things about this game, and I've fallen head over heels in love with it already! I just wish I had a friend that shared my love of games like this. :3

Hm, I hope the author comes around so I can ask him about that. Or that the website comes up sometime. I mean, I'm not sure if it's down or what, but I don't think it is... But we'll see. I'll check back there once in awhile.

I'm hoping I can dig up more like Diver Down, though. ^^

Kind of-- Verge could be seen as one I suppose, although it's a lot more involved. It's like its own little specialized language, kind of? Not sure entirely but I know it's a lot more versatile than most typical 'rpg makers.'

EDIT: Fadera, you can probably get ahold of Grenideer (the creator) through email. I think his address is on his site-- I got ahold of him easily enough when I covered the title theme for a competition awhile back.

...Yep, it's the 'contact' link on the site: http://www.grenideer.com/diverdown/index.htm

Verge is nothing like Visual Basic.
Verge uses a crappy implementation of a C-like scripting language.
There is nothing to create any visual interfaces, its all done painstakingly in that garbage scripting language.
Secondly, Verge is simply terrible to use, and its amazing that anyone ever made anything cool with it. Kudos to them.
Visual Basic is NOT an engine, its a programming language.
The Visual Basic IDE is a drag-n-drop any-mindless-moron-can-use-this kind of programming environment tool.
I used to use that years ago back when I gave a shit about Windows.
..NEVER again will I develop on a Windows operating system.

Any moron can make a silly form in VB, but it takes a master to make a proper application. I guess that's why I've made so many proper applications in VB. :)

Oh gee, wow, hahaha. I use Visual Basic 'cause I'm only a beginner. :] Dad keeps telling me to read the books, but I've never really truly gotten into it, though I do try sometimes and I fiddle around with stuff.

No, you didn't sound mean, I was just afraid of coming off as "lulz plz help cuz i want a step by step 'hold my hand' walkthru kthx". That's what my little sister does. >_<;

The best way to learn is by doing...books can only help so much (and sometimes not at all). But man, you should see all the VB-based programs out there put together by boneheads...and then they call their waste-of-bytes a "professional application". It's sickening!
