Since Terry's Finish Your Abandoned RPG contest idea wasn't really realized what about some future contest ideas in its stead?
Community Ideas so far:
-----------------------
1. Growing/Rebirth theme for Spring.
2. Open characters for the storylines? (like Jenny Everywhere?)
3. Alternate Histories - Like Resistance Fall of Man
4. Cast of Personified Characters (Pesonification)
5. Character Template Pool. (Kinda goes along with 2)
6. Survival RPG (No Leveling, Limited Resources)
7. Complete a next chapter in an exisiting Contest Entry.
8. Make an RPG about Beating this summer heat, or where the heat is the main antagonist/problem to overcome. _________________ Mao Mao Games

How about using only open characters for the storylines? (like Jenny Everywhere?)

That sounds cool didn't know there were any characters like that.
Another one I think would be cool would be the telling of an alternate history timeline. Kind of like Resistance Fall of Man where Aliens invade during WWII or Post-WWII or whatever. It hink those kinds of what-if scenarios are neat. hehe.
Or have you entire cast be personified characters. I think that would be another neat and creative venue. ^_^ _________________ Mao Mao Games

For me, that sort of takes away one of the main things I think is fun with these compos - making up characters and story (which I'm admittedly not very good at - so I do need the practice :P)
Would be cool with another contest sometime soon though - but I don't really have any ideas for a theme... (I feel like lofi or ascii would be cool - but we've already done those). _________________ www.mattiasgustavsson.com - My blog

Since it was abandoned, you mean? Ha ha.
...
..okay, that wasn't funny. Sorry.
I like Options 1 and 2--especially Option 2. (Option 3 sounds like a lot of work to pull off, and Option 4 is something RPGs do a ton of anyway.)
About Option 2: other than Jenny Everywhere, I don't know of any open source characters! I think it would make sense to have each contest participant contribute to a pool of open source characters before the compo starts, so everyone has a nice cast to choose from. I'll just go ahead and propose a format for submitting a character that you guys are free to build on or reject entirely:
Code: | Name:
Species:
Species info (if something we haven't all heard of):
Physical Description:
Personality:
Special skills (if any):
Background (try to be general and not setting-specific so people have the flexibility to use this character in their own game): |
So, for example:
Quote: | Name: Hans Klokmaker
Species: Human
Species info: --
Physical Description: Hans is a lanky, middle-aged man with round-rimmed bifocals and a long, blond ponytail.
Personality: Hans is friendly, quiet, and rather obsessive compulsive. He loves tinkering with things and discovering how mechanisms work.
Special skills: Building and fixing mechanical contraptions.
Background: As his name implies, Hans is a clockmaker of some skill, as well as a part-time inventor. He has kept quiet about his inventions, however, preferring to perfect them in secret in the quiet of his workshop. |
Hans is a good example, I think, because he has a definite personality and skillset that give him a number of roles he could fill in someone's game, but his background isn't so specific that he's only usable in a particular setting or with a particular plotline. What do you think? Shall we give this a try?

I like the idea of the character template too.
Helps give more creativity by having to conform to and think about making a story that revolves around different types of characters than you'd usually make.
Perhaps maybe a theme like Rebirth/Growth and the character pool?
Quote: | Name: Sal Kilner
Species: Human
Species info: N/A
Physical Description: A tall middle aged man with a great charisma about him. He's handsome and looks like a man you can trust.
Personality: He knows how to talk to the masses and will do anything to further his own agenda. He can feign ignorance or knowlege to further his pursuits a greedy man but does haphazardly help those in need at times.
Special skills: A master manipulator knows the craft of acting like no other.
Background: An actor who got his start at an early age. He is a religoius fanatic and high ranking member of an elitist cult. His latest movie "Cries of an orphaned child." boosted his popularity as a compassionate man. |
My Friend Nate wrote: | Name: Ripner
Species: Human
Species info: N/A
Physical Description: A mid-sized white male with a shaved head and a blank, white, expressionless mask over his face.
Personality: An untrustworthy schizophrenic
Special skills: High pain tolerance and unable to be figured out.
Background: He grew up in a poor family and eventually wandered off on his own after killing his family after succumbing to schizophrenia. |

^ Sounds like a profile for Sarah Palin.
Would make a good RPG though. I've had my own ideas of that as such. Of course with all my responsibilities I probably couldn't pull anything off that met my standards. I really don't think that well working under other people's rules, probably because I only have fun doing things that I can justify as having genuine importance.

How about this: an RPG where you can't level up, only survive. No leveling, no gold: just survival. The idea would be to make multiple attempts at the dungeon to eventually learn its layout and take the safest route through, preserving one's power as much as possible for the boss.

Sounds like an interesting idea kinda like the concept behind Resident Evil (Biohazard) have a limited amount of resources and try to survive. _________________ Mao Mao Games

How about this: write the next chapter in an already completed contest entry, using the very same engine and code, just new graphics (if needed) and different scripts.
I was thinking about all the decent (if short) RPGs on this site, and this possibility came to mind. Particularly I was reflecting on RetroRemakes, about how there are like lots of game remakes but no editors for them that I can tell! For all intents and purposes, the games here are FF and DW clones, which are quite in demand, I think.
