Good move. Letting those who want to use their money to support a cause they believe important do so if they wish, and allowing those who don't have the cash to play without having to pirate. Very sensible.

It sounds like it was more of a personal decision than a business decision. As the author says in the news section, "I don't intend to work on any commercial projects in the future. I'm going back to small, personal stuff, most of which won't be game related. I wish I had time to do more, but that's life. :) I hate selling stuff anyway. I think a big problem is that they don't market their games aggressively enough. Particularly they aren't reaching out to people who play games mostly for the story. There is a strong pro-Japan bias among that group... I would at least want to know that the author was familiar with Campbell and Jung before playing. Then I could expect top-notch writing on par with Final Fantasy.
The message is very important. Do not underestimate the importance of every affirmative gesture, because people have a tendency to assume the minimum positive and the maximum negative, except when shown otherwise by specific statements.
Edit:
I noticed that this game has adult characters. That may well make it worth playing. Even better would be lack for a main villain. Well we'll see what it's got, and if it's good I'll review it on GameFaqs.

I'll be interested in seeing your review. I've only played a little bit of it myself (too many games, too little time...), but I really liked what I saw. Oh, and the soundtrack is amazing. Right up there in quality with that Aaron Walz does for the Aveyond series. _________________ Tales of the Rampant Coyote - Old-School Game Developer talks Indie Games, RPGs, and the Games Biz
