I like the idea of pre-rendering a background and then adding a grid over it for collision detection and stuff. Just wondering, how do you handle the character walking behind things? And shadows?

If I remember right the shadows won't be over-top of the characters (he mentioned that in an eralier post), I have no idea how he does the walk behinds. In Danse Macabre (which is almost down I have to create two more levels and save points), the background is pre-rendered, but the objects (trees, tombstones, characters) are rendered in real time over-top of the backdrop and then z-ordered so you can have people walking behind stuff.

heres how im working on it right now::

layer 1: prerendered background
layer 2: character w/ shadows drawn ontop of them
layer 3: tiles that are ontop of the player

with the map editor, i made a utility that takes 4 320x200 pcxs and cuts themup into usable 16x7 diamond tiles, then stores them and builds the maps, then you redo that with only the overlaying objects and a shadowmap, and wah, you have it split up, 3 map files, one thats the background, then the shadow tiles, then the overlaying tiles

but... what im doing is, in the game i draw the background accross 4 ems pages and chunk parts off when the screen scrolls, so just walking ontop of the background gets an average of 500 fps

kinda hard to explain, but next demo will include the source

Ah yes, LBA... Great game. Used to play it back when I was an even more little kid. I even finished the game. I never played part two though.
