Imagine this - an RPG where you're a soldier who has to survive with limited resources in the Kuwait desert during the first gulf war, when a sudden massive spike in solar activity increases heat to deadly levels, forcing the US to withdraw before Operation Desert Storm can be completed. Along the way you find a village populated entirely by open characters (like Jenny Everywhere), and have to lead them to safety.

lol. That's pretty rad.

Oh, hey - I like the alternate history idea. Well, not a specific alternate history - just the idea of doing (and playing) games based on bizarro alternate histories.

I'm thinking of doing a rouge-like with a fire-fighting theme. My GCS is in the testing stage so I think it would be a good test of its abilities.

If if you did it with the shared characters it would be like a Sliders game. :D

Makes me think more of Quantum Leap. That was a great show. ^^

I didn't actually mean the use of a totally shared character... that seems kinda extreme to me. I meant the use of character portraits that have vague histories... design templates that you can make into whatever you want. I don't like how Jenny Everywhere is explicitly a "shifter" -- they should have offered the personality and the looks, and left it at that.

On the other hand, I suppose extreme thoughts have their uses....

What I was really thinking about, was that we would all agree upon a set of characters to use that we designed ourselves. That's what the idea actually was... that we would have like, maybe big macho dude and little petite healer girl with blonde hair and a sweet disposition together in a game, and it would be a requirement of the competition to represent these characters in a way that suggested they were integral to the game.

But I love the idea of beating the heat, even though the summer is wearing on now and by the time we get around to having a competition, it'll be half over already.

That's not a bad idea. Are there any stock character sheets or something we can use to rough them out or should I make one?

Hmm...yeah that's true, I didn't think of that when I suggested. it. ^o^;

Before we make a character sheet, we should agree on what to leave vague, don't you think?

Maybe something like Thieves's World (the books), where several authors wrote stories set in the same world, and where they could all use each others places and characters (so long as they didn't kill off or significantly changed someone elses character)...

Another idea for a theme: how about basing it off of one (or several) of the Seventh Sanctum generators?

To get anything done we'd have to work backwards IMO. Get a bunch of sheets up there then we can chop them down later. At least we'd be getting something done rather than just suggesting ideas. ^_^

I think somebody's gotta take charge and organize. ^^

Hmm, personally I strongly prefer "alternate history" as a theme. This direction strikes me as too restrictive.

If we're going to hold this challenge in the first week of August (and want to tell other communities about it and give them time to prepare), we should really come to a consensus on a theme as soon as possible!

There seem to be two competing impulses driving the ideas for the competition, one for independence and one for collaboration. The alternative history idea favors independence, while the shared characters idea favors cooperation.

I wouldn't mind seeing a collaboration thing started here, but I think that it involves too much organising and preparation for it to really be feasible if we want a compo sometime soon...

Maybe we should go for one more suited for individual effort for now, and maybe continue discussing the collab thing and see what we can work out for some later compo...
