And for every Dwarf Fortress that earns a livable wage for its creators, there are thousands of projects that never hit that critical mass and make almost nothing (or literally nothing, much of the time).

Thousands? Not so sure about thousands, particularly on an annual basis. I don't think I've heard of "thousands" of games which the author. Granted the Indie RPGs may not be doing that great, but they are a tad overpriced in my opinion. The RPG Maker games in particular are not worth $20 apiece, especially when you can find games of comparable value for half that on the console networks.

I think your game is priced about right. It's the kind of thing I'd expect to see in the Walmart games section. On the other hand, it's also competing with Diablo Battle Chest.... I once picked up Cute Knight from the library... didn't expect to see it there.

Regarding the humble indie thing, it seems to me they've tapped the anti-conflict crowd. I saw a (very flattering) article about it in PC Gamer this week. It seems to me kind of like "Christian cool". Games like Devil May Cry emphasize "cool" factor to drive sales, with support from media elites. Humble Indie is playing "novelty cool" + "right thing to do". I haven't really cared for the games from what I've seen, but then again, I'm not much of a platform fan (Capcom's games being the exceptions, because they emphasize character growth).

I think the real reason for their success is that they (or someone there) is/are anti-conflict themselves. AD&D neutral good to the max. It's too offbeat an idea to have come from someone who wasn't. I guess the real question is, are they trying to change the entire situation, or just make a bundle for themselves?

I wouldn't want to put words in JeffR's mouth, but based on my limited interactions with him, I think it's good ol' fashioned capitalism and a desire to do the Right Thing. That's how it's supposed to work, anyway. :)
