Java dies when Web Audio API is finished. Windows kicks the bucket not long after. MS is headed for a major, major PR catastrophe when Windows XP installs get riddled with viruses this summer.

As someone who does web programming for a living, I welcome the day that XP computers are consumed in a torrent of viruses. Perhaps that will hasten the death of Internet Explorer 8 so we can use all the shiny new HTML5 and CSS3 toys without worrying about grannies not being able to use our websites.
Microsoft is definitely facing some really stiff competition recently, and they're in for some rough times in the next couple of years.
Looking at web browser market share trends, Internet Explorer has been in free-fall for a couple of years, and currently sits below 50%. Their biggest threat at the moment is from Google's Chrome browser.
On the PC front, they've definitely suffered from negative backlash to the Windows 8 metro interface. I understand that they wanted to standardize their interface across mobile devices, tablets, and PCs....
However, that's dumb because barely anyone's buying Windows phones or tablets. Apple and Google have firmly established themselves in the mobile marketplace and Microsoft is struggling to make their presence known there.
Meanwhile the mobile market is expanding so even though Windows rules PCs, everyone's shifting over to mobile platforms anyways.
MS Office is getting some serious competition from OpenOffice and google's cloud-based services. Silverlight never had a chance against Flash, and they're both doomed anyway, since HTML5 will be taking over.
In the game market, Microsoft's XBox One is losing against the Playstation 4 due to their creepy always-on Kinect requirement and early bad press from their originally-planned draconian DRM measures. (or maybe just because it's $100 more expensive than the PS4)
Linux-based web servers are more popular than windows-based web servers. Macbooks, and more recently Chromebooks are moving into the laptop marketplace, and now Valve is making moves with their new Steambox linux-based gaming PCs. The walls are closing in on Microsoft from all directions. They need to do something big soon to avoid becoming obsolete. _________________ Mark Hall

The only thing they could do is sack Gates. Gates has contributed to the high prices of PCs for years... it's not for nothing that Apple and Commodore's offerings were cheaper.
I don't care what they do... they are insignificant to me.

Java on the desktop might struggle, but it does a good job on server side.
Statistics rank Java among the top 3 programming languages, so I think it's unlikely that Java will die soon. Maybe the Java browser plugin will, but almost no one is making applets anymore anyways.

Java is also really huge on mobile devices, especially Android apps. _________________ Mark Hall
