Personally I feel that not one of the current mainstream games looks half as good as the SNES Final Fantasy VI (III by American counting). And this has nothing to do with nostalgia, since I never had a SNES and the first time I played FF6 was a couple of years ago on an emulator. I simply hate low-poly models, drab color palettes, and "realism for the sake of realism" with a passion.

okay, sound IS important, but i wouldn't get rid of graphics to get the best music possible, and vice versa. i'd have an even mix of both. What do you think ps2 developer companys concentrated on most when the ps2 first came out? graphics. it was called the "PS2 learning curve." Developers made killer graphics, but didn't focus on other things, like the length of a game. most of the games made during this time were quite short. But what do i know? I don't have a ps2.

Hmm... so what you're saying, Barok, is that I need to make everything good? Well, here's my conclusion: I'm just going to take Final Fantasy 7, rewrite some of the dialogue, and slap the name "Cairn Hill" on it. Heh heh, I'm just kidding. Honestly, all the posts have been a lot of help.
Besides, Final Fantasy 7 confused the Hell out of me. Something about cloning and body-switching and stuff. Am thick, or was that a confusing game?
Incidentally, I cut my teeth of Final Fantasy 3 (I've never played any of the Japanese games, so I'm not going to bother being l33+). One of my favourites, actually. So, it pretty much set the bar, for me.
Well, here's an idea, if I must use music: I could have, say, four different downloads: one could contain the old jazz I think would be most appropriate to the game, one could have all my favourite '60s bands (Dylan, Hendrix, etc., you know what I mean), and for all the the young'uns out there, I'll have some early '90s (Radiohead, Sonic Youth, basically just bands I like myself). And then, I'll have a significantly smaller download, with no music at all.
This way, I could release my first version using music with which I'm familiar, and which I can easily acquire, which would be very little work, really, and I could release subsequent downloads with more game-appropriate music.
Oh, yes, what's RPGDX's policy on blatant copyright infringement?
Thoughts?

I don't think we have any other rules about this than the rest of the world. But only if you are hosted by Indie-RPG and are putting stuff on your account free to download while it is in fact copyrighted by someone else, we might object.
