The list of stuff you shouldn't post about.

You can learn a lot about people from how they act in a flamewar. I dunno why they are so taboo, hehe.

But anyway, that is a pretty good list, if not a bit obvious. I kinda disagree with the religion part, since it can be productive in terms of game plots and whatnot if the discussion is focused in that sort of way.

PostPosted: Mon Feb 17, 2003 2:09 pm    Post subject: Listen to Henry James, He Knows Where It's At [quote]

Henry James wrote:
Discretion has ceased to consist of silence ; silence is gross and thick ; whereas wisdom should taper, however tremulously, to a point.

Well, I agree with the good Mr. James, but in the interests of world peace, I guess I can stuff all my objections down my throat with one hand while I shake with the other. In other words, sure, I'll limit my posts in that manner.
The only thing, though, is what happens if a game's content itself deals with these things? Are we then not allowed to mention it in the forum? I mean, I'm certainly not going to avoid those issues in my games, and it seems sort of silly for a forum devoted to RPGs to handicap itself in this regard.
So, I'd say that that self-imposed censorship is fine, and I'll agree to it, but that any RPG content itself is open-game, so to speak. Of course, when this is the case, you should keep all commentary focused on the game itself as much as possible. Sound good?

I'm going to have to disagree with the banned list for several reasons:

  • Avoiding topics is counter-productive. Avoidance leads to misunderstanding; misunderstanding leads to war.
  • Those topics might well arise in the context of a rpg, so they are not inherently off-topic for this board.
  • Flame-wars can be dealt with when and if they come up.

If the topic was game related im pretty sure it wouldn't start a flame war.
I was more thinking that these topics might get locked beacuse in the words of Mr. Mandrake they are "a flame war waiting to happen" :D

Bit im sure everone in this forum is mature enough for civilised expression of ideas anyway.

btw, Atari 2600 r th3 b35t c0ns0l3s!!!

meh... if someone tries hard enough, they can turn anything into a flame war. Hell, I could start a topic on what colour grass I should have in my RPG, and I can already think of flame wars eruptin' on that ('Green!' 'No, brown, you moron!', etc, etc)... of course, there's a difference between people being pissy, and someone starting a topic that is bait, and nothing more.

When flamewars do erupt its a sign that the people in that forum can't interact well together. Actually flamewars are usually a sign that a forums about to crash and burn.

Either that, or some people just have strong feelings in topics not meant to be discussed at these forums....
