I like the idea of a multi-dimensional categorization system (although I realize it's harder to set up and harder to use than the current system), but I would use very different specifics. One setting for prespective (top down/first person/isometric/floating camera), one for action content (defined as finger-twitching, nothing turn-based), a different one for strategic content, one for story content (as in amount, not quality), amount of linearity... It's easy to go overboard here, but even a simple multi-dimensional system would be more useful than the current system IMO. For example, I agree that non-linear games still fit into the other categories, but there are people who consider nonlinearity the most important aspect of a RPG.

In my opinion... yes. But of course I'm just saying that to prevent insane hassle with implementing a multi-dimensional categorization system. :-)

As for people wanting non-linearity, for them I won't be adding a category but rather a search function. Game authors will have to mention 'non-linear' in their description then.

and others who think linearness is the most important aspect...

anyway, you can try and finaggle as much as you can with this, but really, you seem to be the only person screaming and throwing a tantrum about this whole deal. I myself think that the catagories are just there to make things easier (ie: not existing for rigidity, but for the fact of filtering down the number of RPG's seen on screen at once, and thereby giving everyone who submits a game an equal chance in getting attn for said game), adn bjron made a very good choice in borrowing those from RPG Compo gold. Now there was more than 1 or 2 people complaining, I would say maybe the genres needed to be changed (ie: the same reason why I had added the adventure gaming genre last year...there was damn near 50 people claiming that I had to add it, which was a majority of the people at the site at the time), but since it's barely even a handfull....

well either way, it's bjorn site, it's his decision, and all I can say is I like it and I don't see why you feel the need to complain and argue and shove your ideas at the board.

It's fine Mandrake, he's a bit of an itch but try not to heat the discussion up too much.
Rainer Deyke, I agree with Mandrake though in that there should be more people agreeing with your points to start changing stuff.

For the moment, I'll leave the genres as they are (might make some little tweaks to their decription, not sure). If the new categories really aren't being used, I will go with the reducing the number of categories back to normal approach. That will at least be after the compo.

Did I ask for anything to be changed? No, I just stated that I did not understand the reasoning behind the categories. I understand a little better now that you've explained, although the system still seems somewhat messy to me. But if people like the current system, by all means keep it!

I like the new system as well... if I had to complain about something, it would be that the function to organize the games by different methods, is all the way at the bottom. I seriously think it needs to be at the top... 'cause most people won't even scroll down all the way and see it!

...other than that, a search is definetly a good idea... this way, people can look for keywords when they're looking for an RPG... say, I had a sudden urge to try an RPG with gnomes in it... I could type gnomes in the search, and see if anything pops up... you know... stuff like that.

Ok, I understand Rainer. And I believe I've already told earlier that I really do appreciate that you're asking questions instead of just staying silent, so thanks.

Now DarkDread, you make a good point. I've thought about it but I couldn't see how to put it in the header in a nice way. But I think I'll move it anyway now.

BTW, anyone else experiencing weird session problems now on the main RPGDX site? I am... and examining the problem.

Edit
Hmm, the RPGDX sessions couldn't be restored because of the following disturbing MySQL error: Can't open file: 'rpgdx_sessions.MYI'. Whatever caused it, it was resolved by redefining the table. If this is some random file corruption, I'll be sure to make at least weekly backups of the database.
