Well i just got a call from my wife (i'm at work right now, she's at home), and it turns out that our computer has a virus, and it's hard drive is completely wiped out. SOB. Well it looks like I know that I'm going to be doing all weekend long- reinstalling EVERYTHING. Shit. And my last backup is about a month old to boot. Goddammit.

this sucks.

Don't know what to tell ya, except get a DVD burner. I'm getting one after my next coding job pays off.

backing the system up space wise isn't a problem. Zipdisks work just fine. I't just getting my lazy ass to actually do it. Heh, i guess i thought i was invulnarable.

I feel your pain... I had to wipe my windoze 98 partition a few days ago, and reinstall everything because win2k's bootloader totally fucked up the mbr... even after I had formatted the mbr, parts of it were still there, grr.

I reinstalled Windows XP yesterday because my PC kept crashing.
I'm too lasy to delete my old windows installations, so now I've got 4 dirs of windows installs: Old_win, Windows, Win XP and the newest one, Win. I don't like searching all those dirs for valuable data, I'll have to sort those as well.
Poor Mandrake, wish you luck.

I spent yesterday digging a hard drive out of a box, installing win98 on it, booting it up, transferring all personal data off another hard drive (on which windows had broken severely enough that it could no longer bootup, plus before that it was having to be rebooted every two hours) then wiping that drive and installing win2000 on it, and now I'm slowly rebuilding my little computer world under a new OS...

Hopefully I didn't lose anything (Unless I forgot to transfer stuff, which is always possible) but it was still a big pain. Stupid machines. :) My main frustration is my lack of convenient rewritable midsize media... can't put anything on a floppy anymore, they're too small, certainly don't want to burn every day's work to a different CD... yes, there are rewritable CDs but I've heard they're unreliable.

How much do zipdisks cost, anyway?

So many people going through similar situations must be comforting. :-) In my case, the biggest disaster that happened to my files was an accidental deltree command which I thought I had run on a:\ but after pressing 'y' a few times, I noticed I was wiping my c:\.

Now I'm off making a backup, it's been a while...

hmm. reminds me of a funny story.

bill gates and the president of general motors were sitting together, having dinner at a fancy restaurant. then bill gates decides to rub it in about how computers are more advanced than vehicles.
"you know, if vehicles had kept up to computers, you'd have v20 engines instead of v8!"
The prez of general motors just nodded.
"And instead of a hundred horse power, you'd have a thousand!"
once again the prez just nodded.
"And your vehicles would be decked out with many fancy utilities!"
Then the prez spoke. "Well, at least our vehicles don't crash four times a day."

- Yeah, I've heard that one before.I think I heard it about the Airlines vs. Bill Gates before, and how they could fly at super-sonic speeds or something. =)

well, recently I caught a trojan (Or SOMETHING...) and everything I had done on my game, worlds beyond, was deleted.... I'm not worried about losing it, so much as the fact that someone out there now has all my work and could be taking credit for it right now.

THATS why i don't code on a machine with an active internet connection :)
It's a pain in the ass, but oh well, it's worth it. Hasn't gotten a virus in years.
