Well, sounds good to me then... you can count me in... I'll see what I can do heh. Hmm... maybe I'll bug some doom metal band to use their songs for the music in the game. That might be neat. :)

Alright, I think we've got this compo mostly sorted out then. A quick summary:

When
Start: April 25th 24:00 GMT
End: April 27th 24:00 GMT

Game restrictions
Make anything you want as long as:
- You can finish it in 48 hours
- It is an RPG

Using premade stuff
Basically, you can use any premade stuff (engine, graphics, sound, music) as long as that does not include the story, levels/maps and scripts (for as far as they are not part of the engine).

Critiria
We want to see the game finished, above all, so don't try to take it too far. As for winning, there will be several categories in which you'll be able to win, as in previous compo's.

Participating
I'll try to have compo functionality working on RPGDX at least a week before the compo. Once that works, participating should be like:

1. Create a new project on RPGDX
2. Go to the compo page and subscribe to it with your game
3. When the compo starts, subscriptions will be locked (only admins will be able to change them).
4. Update your project with the right name (if it hasn't already) and write up a short description of the story once you feel like it.
5. Update your project with it's final name, description and a download link before the end of the compo, then leave it.
6. 24 hours after all this has settled down, voting will commence. Any RPGDX member will be able to vote number 1 for each categorie (maybe even number 1, 2 and 3). Implementing this could get tricky though...
7. Appropriate awards will be linked by the admins to the winning projects. I'll make them show up on the project pages.

I might also try to put in some sort of development diaries for projects, in which you can write updates regularly. Otherwise, we'll at least be using our IRC channel.

Sounds fun. I won't be able to participate on that weekend, as I have friends coming in from out of town. It's probably just as well, since I am kinda focusing on the 'Creep-O-Rama' game I posted screenshots of. If there are more compos coming down the pipe in a few months, I will probably enter one of those.

I'm looking forward to reading everyone's dev diaries. One fun thing to do would be to have everyone do a Gamasutra-style postmortem on their projects after the compo is over - i.e., a summary of the experience, plus five things that went right and five things that went wrong. I'd love to read that for everyone's games. A separate award for "best commentary" might even be in order, since that can be as informative to other RPG developers as the games themselves.

Heh, heh, heh.... I've got a good idea for a nice little mystery plot, no fighting, hmm.... Now I just need to work on putting together an engine from all my little test programs....

Heh, i'm gone for a month and already you're all organising a contest! Well, you haven't got the better of me - you can count me it. Ive got a very odd idea that is just begging to be used. Anyhow, thats the last week of easter break, so thats pretty perfect for me.

BTW - I'm planning to use ripped graphics, but not from a computer game for some parts of my game, will there be any major penalties for doing that? What about COMPLETELY ripped? Heh, gotta try to be as lazy as I can with this :).

I've been wanting another crack at this scince the DE MiniRPG compo...

We don't have special rules for ripped graphics, their legality depends on normal copyright laws. If you have the author's permission to use them, go ahead. If you don't have the author's permission, but you don't have a problem with copyright infringement (or something), you can still enter the compo with it.

As for a penalty, if you are a decent man, you'll just mention that you have ripped the graphics and from where, so that the judges (just RPGDX visitors) can take it into account for their judgement. With ripped graphics, it wouldn't be fair if you won in most beautifull graphics category.

Ok, I've got the contests support all thought out on paper, both the database structure as all the relevant pages. I hope to make good progress on implementing it this weekend.

There's one thing different than in the previous compo though, and it's about convenience and preference. Instead of having several categories to win in, I'd rather have 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. This saves a lot of hassle for implementing voting and the admin doesn't have to specify the categories. And I like it better, as we could create three related prize images for 1st, 2nd en 3rd price more easily than for a set of categories that could be different each contest. Also, with premade graphics/music, what use is voting for best graphics or music? That would be voting on who has the best material ready.

I would like to hear some more opinions about this.

welll, we could change that to: "best original graphics done within the 48 hours", so that premade graphics/sound is out of it, but people like me, who plan on doing the graphics those few days, will be able to compete against each other.

So what are the premade engines that are really available? Aren't the mainstream ones all illegal or incomplete?

here are some free, non-illegal rpgmakers. The ones I listed are complete enough to use for the compo:
