indie rpgs are made by non-professionals. Just your run of the mill everyday guy. :)

What Ninkazu said. :-)
And, with the notion of "independant", we mean non-commercial most of the time.

Depends on what you mean by commercial. Indie films and indie music often cost money, but they're not mass-produced dross that exists solely to make money. The same could be applied to computer games, although in practice indie rpgs tend to be free. Personally I consider a game to be "indie" if it received no publisher funding, even if it's produced by a big studio.

Actually, I always assumed that the 'indie' part refurred to the fact that we were creating our own RPGs to our own standards/ideals. Each person in a team knows their own style and what it has to offer a game, because they are independant producers of parts of a game. Surely a large company doesn't qualify as independant, however they choose to fund themselves. _________________ Some may know me as MidnightDreamer... time for a namechange.

Interesting. Maybe Mandrake has any additional comments? After all, he's the guy that started all this. :-)

Indie is any one who puts up their own money to get their product out with out a high profile publisher. For instance anyone who buys their media ( CD, DVD, Cartridge, etc... ), buys advertisement, and packaging I would consider indie. This of course is very expensive but if you have a hit game 100% of the profits go to you.

any coders I can find on the net and email and they'll reply personally to or that I can talk to in IRC or on a forum indie, everyone else is wannabe comercial, or comercial.
