PostPosted: Wed May 21, 2003 1:40 am    Post subject: My two cents [quote]

Hey all, how are ya. Probably having a far more fun time than I am at the moment. I'm sitting here at work on my 23rd floor window looking over the city that is Melbourne, Australia. What I wouldnt give to be on a nice tropical beach, clear blue water, white sand. MEH- I can dream. Beats the hell out of actually doing any work (great its only half way throught he week and I've already lost my get up and go).

Okay enough rambling, incase you cant tell- I'm majorly bored. So yeah I was reading the forums on here and decided I wanted to write an RPG. I started work on it about two hours ago and its not progressing too badly so far. Its being written in C++/LUA using the OpenGL API.

What I've got so far is an engine which can load in and render animated 3D actors. At the moment the game scripts (written in LUA) can load any number of actors it wants and move them around as it feels necessary. I just downloaded the d20 system reference (http://www.wizards.com/D20/) and was thinking of taking bits and pieces from that to use in the engine.

As I said, this whole idea really just sprung up out of this mornings total boredom, so as yet I've really got no idea for storys or characters or anything like that. If any of you are equally bored feel free to throw me some ideas, or just tell me i'm an idiot. Either way, its all good.

Well, I'll quit boring you all for now and go back to staring out my window.

Catchyas.

You can always use one of my old pitched out ideas. "Hearts of the Just" comes to mind, but you have to like Japan.

I really can't think of one right now, even though I've had zillions of ideas before. Maybe it's the fact that I should be sleeping now, and that school gets out next week.

Australia though, huh? Wow, I've always wanted to go there; of course, not to work on the 23rd floor of some building. .....maybe the 24th :P

What the story with "Hearts of the Just"? I'm pretty much open to anything- I just need a story to build around my engine so I can get something playable.

As for Australia, you might want to wait another 6 months before you come visit- its winter, the sky is filled with dark grey clouds, and its pouring down with rain at the moment. *DAYDREAMS* Wonder what Tahiti is like this time of year...

Oh well, back to staring out the window again. Oh look, a cloud *yawns*. As a side note, anybody want to hire an Analyst/Programmer- this job is so unsatisfying.

Hmph, they don't allow us onto the internet at my work.....

Boredom is not a good reason to start an ambitious project, you should have some passion for game programming in the very least.

ARGH. Gotta find somewhere else to host these pics. Sorry, I'll fix them up soon.

For anyone who cares, heres two screenshots which are the result of yesterdays boredom.

* Stupid GeoCities *

This one is 68 actors controlled by a LUA script running around at random for no apparent reason.

* Stupid GeoCities *

And this is just two models sitting around doing nothing. As you can see the frame rate is pretty shocking at the moment (~25fps on a P4 @ 2.4GHz w/GeForce4), but I haven't done anything to optimize things yet, will be up over 60fps by the time I've finished.

Oh well, thats enough ramblings from me for now, I think I'm going to have a look over the "Hearts Of The Just" story and see what I can pull together, should have an update sooner or later for anyone who cares.

Catchyas.

Boredom wasn't the reason I started the project. I do enjoy game programming, its just I never really get time to do anything serious, and since I'm having a dull period at work atm I figured its as good a time as any to start something.

A good image host would be... um... (well, I use Xepher, but it takes a while for him to actually create your account)

Yer, they are MD2's, but I'm thinking of moving to MD3's so that I can use multi-part models and change weapons and body parts depending on what armour/weapons the player equips.
