Have any of you considered making a first person shooter? I've been thinking about starting visual c++ this summer and trying to make one just as a big project to keep myself busy.
If you were to make an FPS, what would it be like?

I would make a raycaster/Doom clone as a Java applet.

*cough* "off-topic" forum, anyone? *cough*
But if I could, I would make one with a nice engine that someone else wrote - you know, Quake this-or-that engine or Doom something-else engine etc. - because I couldn't possibly think of everything that those developers did, because they get paid and there's a bunch of them but only one of me, and I'm too lazy to reinvent the wheel every time I need something done.
As for the story behind the game, I think I'd make it along the lines of "big macho guy with assault rifle and shotgun must infiltrate big weapons factory and steal more guns so as to be able to do the same with a bigger weapons factory and so on". This seems to be something that would be fun for me. :) _________________ Don't ask no stupid questions and I won't send you away.

My game Lightslayer could be described as a fps/rpg hybrid. It uses primitive raycasting technology - think Wolfenstein 3D (released 1992). I've been thinking about making a modern sequel, but the amount of content needed has been holding me back. It's a lot easier to draw a 64x64 bitmap of a monster than to create a fully textured 3D model of the same.

And your creatures can only look towards the player, right?
I downloaded both your games yesterday... were fun to play. Gameplay above graphics, ey. :P
Nah, the graphics could have been worse, overall the textures were okay. But are you serious with the register thing for 15 bucks? I can buy WarCraft for that price 15 times.

Yes.

I was serious when I released it three years ago. I'll probably re-release it as freeware not too far off in the future. In the meantime, I still get the occasional order which partially offsets the cost of my web hosting.

According to John Carmack, the first week or so of Wolfenstein 3D development was just making the code, then it took them a few months to make the actual content. It looks like Lightslayer's engine is more advanced though - the first thing I noticed was that it actually had floor and ceiling textures. (oops! hehe)
