Probably going to completely alienate myself here by the sounds of everyone elses posts, but... I hate metal, never could understand the attraction... I like my Techno and Top 40 crap :/ Then again you prolly say that same about that... Shrugs...

heh, I've tried to explain before, but I've never been able to come up with a good resoning. I think, the main dislike people have of metal, is simple due to being exposed to it in very limited, and somewhat 'mainstream' versions. The genre itself is so diverse, that there's probably a metal band out there for just about anyone to enjoy. If you like techno for example, try the latest Kovenant album... you might find yourself enjoying it. ;)

Btw, I do enjoy a lot of techno, though most of it probably not in the same style you listen to. I like a lot of EBM, like VNV Nation... but more industrial type stuff, like :wumpscut: is good too.

Oh, I just found this great CD. Some guy called Robert Berry has apparently decided to create a soundtrack for The Wheel of Time. Even though it's not metal, I just love it! Now imagine Blind Guardian making a WoT concept album...that'd be great!

Anything electronic and anything metal... I listen to lots of crazy shiznit. My absolute favorite bands are always electronic/metal crossovers, though. Most notable are

KMFDM - if I was stranded on a desert island and I could only take one CD, it would be Nihil by KMFDM. Really. They're perfect. A great guitarist, excellent programming, intelligent lyrics, excellent male/female vocals with gospel harmonies... musical orgasm time. Industrial-metal?

RAMMSTEIN - I understand that in Europe they're quite mainstream and stuff, but that doesn't change their freaky subject matter and rock factor. Simple Industrial-metal.

Zeromancer - I could go on and on and stuff, but the fact is that Zeromancer just kicks lots of ass. Very unknown, but high class factor, they should get kudos for integrating poppy techno into a very heavy sound. Techno-metal?

Zorg - Crazy Estonians do really excellent Judas Priest covers, and also great original materials. They're so obscure it's great. Very, very heavy. Industrial-metal, I think.

Fear Factory - Don't laugh too much. Their second album was very good. Cookie-Monster-ish death-metal vocals and all. I actually like everything they've done so far, which probably makes me a sellout or something. Poppy techno-metal. Not over-heavy.

Die Krupps - There is no other. Best "true" industrial-metal hybrid ever. Really great guitarist too. Industrial-metal, of course.

Frontline Assembly - they're like Fear Factory sometimes, with crunchy death guitar bits here and there in the industrial. Industrial-metal.
Front 242 - Not much guitar sound, but still badass. First you lock the target... Industrial. :)

Funker Vogt - Not much guitar sound either, except on the new album. That's alright, because he's really clever at integrating techno elements into industrial, just for variety's sake. Go Funker. Industrial-techno? General madness?

I like black metal and death metal, though I can't tolerate too much of either in one sitting. I find it extremely hard to concentrate on doing anything while listening to either, owing to the fact that I'd much rather stop and examine their delicate chromatic chord progressions.

Darkdread, you should check out Fear Factory's 2nd album... they kept the death trappings, including vocals, etc. etc. but incorporated angry techno as well. It's good.

Fear factory? Not over-heavy? I HOPE you're being sarcastic. Either that, or you've never heard their song, Shock.

I dunno what you listen to, but by my standards nothing I've heard from FF is really that heavy. I'll listen to Shock, just to be sure. Thanks. :)

Hmm Fear Factory. I like their stuff from the Carmageddon soundtrack. I think it was songs from Demanufacture but without the vocals. Nice repetitive heavy metal for when youre in that repetitive heavy metal mood. That mixed with Quake2 soundtrack.

Shock is heavy in that whole-lotta-bass-in-the-mix way, but not at all in the fucking crazy ass shiznit way. If you like lots of bass in the mix, get the latest craptacular In Flames release. So much bass its annoying. Anyone heard Ebony Lake? Thats some crazy stuff. QUICKLYSHERAN! but. she. ran. from. noth-ing. but. the. SOUNDOFTHEWIND! WHIPAROUNDHER! as. if. to. call. her. back. in-to. the. DEPTHOFTHEWOODS!

Heh...this is interesting.

Well I, for one, am a pop-punk bitch. Or so I've been told, anyway. Ska also kicks ass. For your enjoyment: Sum 41, American Hi-Fi, Avoid One Thing, Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, Goldfinger, Econoline Crush, Fenix TX, Eve 6, Less Than Jake, Treble Charger, Millencolin, NOFX, Bosstones, Nerf Herder, etc. etc. I'm sure you get the drift.

Also, actual: do I just block you out when you start talking about metal or have you been lying to me all this time? You're supposed to be my guru of all things semi-punky. :(

I honestly harbour a strong dislike towards Fear Factory. They're too cliche for my tastes. I do like one of thier songs though, off of Demanufacture (I belive that's the album name, it's been so long, heh).

Pink Floyd: Practically, my musical anchor -- when I get tired of everything else I listen to, I come back to Floyd like a Moth to a Bug Light.

Roger Waters: After spliting with Pink Floyd after The Final Cut, he went on to compose several satirical albums that are worth the time spent listening to.

Nine Inch Nails: I have grown rather fond of Reznor's music over the past year. My sister used to listen to NIN almost a decade ago, so when I rediscovered them this past year, it was very nostalgic.

Weird Al Yankovic: Poodle Hat is great. I pretty much only listen to "modern" music -- willingly -- when twisted by Al.

Black Sabbath

Graeme Revell: The Dune miniseries album is pretty much all I have to go off of, but it is a album to listen to.

Danny Elfman: While practically anything by Elfman is good to listen to, The Nightmare Before Christmas album is especially enjoyable.

Devil Doll: It is very hard to find anything by Devil Doll, as most of their LPs were special releases; however, their music is richly layered. The Girl Who Was... Death and The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms are both worth listening to.

Sigur Rós: Anything by them is good, ambient music. Much of their work is what can be described as haunting.

Massive Attack: I got into MA -- originally -- after hearing "Angel" on the Snatch movie sountrack. While I don't much care for their first album, Mezzanine and 100th Window are enjoyable.

Gary Numan: Admittedly, I have not listened to much by Numan, but "Cars" and "Down in the Park" are great songs. Foo Fighters have a rather nice cover of "Down in the Park"...

Yoko Kanno: The music for Cowboy Bebop is just fun to listen to -- it often has a tendency to be relatively sad, especially when taken in context of the scenes the tracks are played with.

The Doors: A true staple of old school music; who hasn't listened to "The End"? Although not as richly layered as the music the Pink Floyd produced, nor as ripe with meaning, the music of The Doors is somehow just as etheral.

I also have a tendency to listen to movie/television/video game soundtracks/scores quite a bit. The two examples that come to mind are the music to Lexx and Myst III: Exile. Then there is the music from Cirque Du Soleil. Bleh. Too much. I have a relatively small mp3 collection (a little over 1300 files), and this -- rather extensive -- list hardly does it justice. Oh well.[/b]

Whee! Someone who has somewhat similar tastes! :)

I also only listen to modern music after Weird Al gets ahold of it. "All about the Pentium" or whatever it's called is my favorite.
