Yeah, I'm completely like that Locrian. Except I care about saving other people and I think Kirsten is hot :) _________________ That's not a broken link, it's a PICTURE of a broken link. It's really very conceptual.

Hehe well that was a bit of an exaggeration to communicate an idea I guess. I tend to play a big hearted good guy in games cause no matter how cold and apathetic I can be I'm not completely dead. But in games like Zelda:ALLTP I didn't really care that much about rescuing the princess. It was just something you had to do to advance the story. Hmmm... this brings up an interesting thought though... if I didn't HAVE to rescue her, then I would definitely want to... weird...
I remember when I first played that game I was pissed cause I couldn't wander around into the town. I wanted to go check out the nearby places first before going to rescue her but they had everything blocked off so youd funnel your way to the castle. :(
Kirsten is so ugly though man...

Yeah, something about being forced to make a moral choice cheapens it. _________________ That's not a broken link, it's a PICTURE of a broken link. It's really very conceptual.

That is, if it's important to the story (which it frequently is), the designers should have saught a more elegent way of including such revelations than the old "revealing passage in a book" trick. It's a clumsy way of telling backstory.

That all depends on whether or not the info provided is vital to the story, or simply additional information used to flesh out the game world. If it's something necessary to completing the game, then I agree with you totally.
The approach I've taken in FB is to allow the player to complete the entire game with a minimal amount of world interaction -- if they so desire. Certainly, the experience will be severely diminished, but it can be done. Players who choose to explore and interact with the world are rewarded with tidbits of information (or entire sub-plots), and a greater understanding of both the game world, and the PCs. The main point being you have to go out of your way to find the additional content -- rather than all of it being rammed down your throat :)
