All the really disturbingly scary movies I've seen are quiet old: Carnival of Souls, The Haunting of Hill House, The Birds, and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari come to mind. Most modern "scary movies" I've seen don't really scare so much as they startle or gross out.

I'm no film buff so it's possible I'm just watching the wrong movies. I can say that I'm plenty fond of many modern movies, it's not just that I stick to "the classics". I just haven't really found any scary ones. Maybe black and white is just scarier, for some reason.

Agree or disagree? Any recommendations on scary modern movies?

I don't know if I'd say those movies are scary- creepy, yes, brilliant peices of film-making yes, but scary? Only movie that really scared the crap out of me was the japenese Ringu, which, lucky for me, I saw before the american one.

But really....I think IT is pretty good until about halfway through....Hmmm. They aren't modern, but the Hammer Horror classics are nice, and non-black and white. I'd say fro more scare and less hollywood crap, turn to Japense cinema, there horror scene is getting quite good. Like The Eye, is an excellent peice.

I think, it's jsut the edge is gone off most movies. Creepy is out, Jump-scare is in. And gore. It's sad. And very depressing.

They live is a pretty good one....

About The Ring... it was fun to watch the Jap version (and the Jap had a nicer ending) but I thought the American one was A LOT more scary. I saw that one in cinema and couldn't get it out of my head for weeks.

Yesterday me and Modanung watched Ghost Ship, which was more of a fun scary gory movie than a real scary movie. I liked watching it and at least it doesn't haunt me.

this gets me an idea...how about the next RPG compo...make a RPG based on classic horror movies

I don't think I've ever seen a classic horror movie. Creating a scary setting might be a nice idea though.

I rented the movie "THEY", because on the back of the box it said it had the most terrifying ending ever...This was the worst movie i have ever seen in my entire life. It ranks right up there with darkness falls, which is the second worst movie i have ever seen in my entire life. The only movie i ever saw that i thought was scary was "IT". Also my one friend told me that event horizon was good but i never saw it yet.

Event Horizon was ok, not very scary but at least it wasn't downright funny like most recent "horror" movies. The only movies that I can remember creeping me out a bit are those living dead movies. Not the old black and white one, but the spinoffs. Sometimes those movies nail the whole zombie feeling right on the head. Like the fat zombie in the house in the remake of Night of the Living Dead. Now that was just freaky. and gross. After I watched that movie I was lookin over my shoulder the rest of the night making sure there were no zombies after me. Sadly the recent Resident Evil movie failed to create convincing zombies. They were just people pretending to be zombies, not REAL zombies. I don't know how those cheesy NoTLD spinoff movies did it but it just feels right. I've only seen the one where theyre in the house and the one where theres a bunch of punk kids or something. Was a while ago. I have yet to see the one where they are trapped in the mall... anyone know the title of that one?

Dawn of the Dead was the one in a shopping mall, and my favourite of the series. My second favourite one is the Night of the Living Dead remake... freaky as hell!

ok, I'm a horror junky, with movies as well as books, (and one of the sources of income for me right now is horror short stories....it's not much, but it's better than nothing), and my favorite calssification is Zombie films.

Ok, I loved the first Notld (night of the living dead). The remake, while the effects were better, changed too many things. like, the scene were the little girl kilsl her mother and begins to eat her. In the remake, the girl was older, and didn't stab her mother to death. It's just not as scary. Esp without the swinging light bulb effect.

Now, the direct sequal to this was Dawn of the Dead, which is great because Dario Argentio payedc George Romero to make it, and then hired the Goblins (who did the awesome soundtrack to thefilm Susperia) to do the music. He then re-released it in Italy as the movie Zombie.

Now, this rocks because then an itlain director (whose name escapes me) made so,me really kick ass sequals to this that are just down right awesome. Then youhave the coemdy spin offs (the punk rock ones) where the idea of brain eating and zombies came together. These were Return of the living dead, and George Remero, although thinking they were very funny, had nothing to do with them. Then you have the last of the real Notld trilogy, Day of the Dead, but that one sucked ass.

Then you had the movies by Hammer Horror than influenced Remero when he made Notld, which were based on 2 things. The first zombie flick was based on vodoo, and was called The Plague of the Zombies. It was kinda good, good atmosphere, but lame in the plot. Although it had one scene that was really creepy, with a grave yard full of zombies trying to eat one of the main cahracters.

Then came the most infeluntial zombie horror film, done by hammer. it was called Last Man on Earth (starring Vincent Price), and was based on the Richard Matheson classic and brilliant novel "I am Legend". This was cool as all hell, flesh eationg zombies, post apocalptic future, one man alive. good stuff. The movie "the Omega Man" was also based on this book, but wasn't as faithfull as a rendition, and therefore, wasn't reallya s good.

If ti wasn't for those two movies (or the book), Night Of the Living Dead, and other Zombie flicks migth never have been made. Which wouild have been a shame. oh yeah there was also an 80's film taken place in Ohio called the dead Next Door, but that one was just plain horrible. I guess you could say Evil Dead (and it's sequals) were also zo,mbie films as well....but only in a more loose sense of the word.

And as for a compo with a horror theme, sounds like a good halloween compo suggestion :)

oh yeah, and 28 days later is an excellent, excellent modenr zombie film with great hammer-horror style atmosphere.

I've never seen pet semetary... I hear it's REALLY awful... The book was awesome, though. The tought that someone can write a BOOK that scares the shit out of you.... Wow... I mean, you think- This guy has TALENT.
