My point is that it is less painless for the end user. Not to mention the fact that not all people would be able to listen to OGG files outside of your program, due to their media-player of choice not supporting the format. Who wants to have two copies of the same file lying around their drive?

And I see no problem with that -- if people want free access to your proprietary data (i.e. the music), they should have to work for it ;)

Let 'em buy the OST, or something ^.^

Ah. But see, not everyone uses Winamp. I don't. The probability that JoeUser will isn't 100%.

While you jest, that's not really the point. I can get most of Myst III: Exile's music simply by copying the mp3 files its installation program copies to my harddrive to somewhere else on my harddrive. Sure, they offer an OST, but you don't have to buy it in order to listen to the music outside of the game.

There really is no need to sell OSTs in the indie scene -- especially if you are not capitalizing off of your product. But again: that really isn't my point; my point was that supporting mp3 for situation's where it makes sense to support mp3 is a good idea, as it simplifies matters for everyone. If JoeUser had to choose between simply copying a set of files to a directory, or having to search download.com for a converter, run the converter, and then dump those converted files into the directory, I'd put my money on the former, rather than the latter. People are lazy.

Heh. That's true. That is a valid point. That's one of the design considerations that must be thought over.

But, that's assuming that the license fees have to be paid. While they would be, should you wish to sell the product, or if the product is reported to the proper authorities, they wouldn't have to be for things that are not released. Or, for things that would never gain even a miniscule fraction of attention on the web. For most indie developers, those are pretty much synomynous truths.

Also, I find the text in italics on this page to be very interesting. (Or here)

Unless you plan on distributing more than 5000 copies of your program you don't have to pay for a license for MP3. If this is the case it would probably make it easier for the end user (but only if you plan out letting them use their own music).

I personally would use OGG so I don't even have to worry about licensing.
