I really like the 'world on chains' idea as well. So what about this:
In each of the constituancies a government or a ruler is in charge, and he holds his power because he is in controll of one of the chains moorings to the earth. If the people try to displace him or attack his kingdom, and it looks like he is going to loose, he can simply release one of the chains and bring the world one step closer to plumetting into the eternal darkness.
If we are having gods, why not make it so the masses believe that it is the power of the gods that hold the chains up, and if people stop worshipping him or her the chains will weaken, and fall to the ground. This does not neccessarily have to be true, just a belief held by the people. _________________ Some may know me as MidnightDreamer... time for a namechange.

But reiner deyke said i could use it...
Damn... I had a story and everything built around the idea and 3 episode scripts written- I REALLY don't want to have to switch to another idea.

Don't worry, we're not using the chains idea for Jiall, for XMark says so. _________________ Mark Hall

Hey, this is turning out pretty cool.
How about this:
The world is inherently just a big, barren ball, alien and alliterative. It's just empty, without distinguishing features of any kind.
There are a handful of creatures, let's call them dragons for now, which can break up this geographical monotony. Each pulls with it its own little biozone. For example, Nessie the Loch Dragon lives in a lake, surrounded by barren wasteland. She decides she doesn't like it there, and so gets up and moves 100 miles off through the wastes, finds a nice place, and plops herself down. Within a week, her old lake has dried up, and is now just barren wasteland, while during that time it's been raining like crazy in her new place, and a lake's just beginning to form.
Humans, of course, can only exist around dragons.
Some dragons are just nice guys, and provide the humans a place to live without any sort of repayment. Others are more mercenary, and still others treat them as slaves.
Some humans have managed to capture dragons, chaining them up or whatnot, gaining them all of the advantages while avoiding dragon fickleness.
I've just run together a lot of different ideas other people (particularly Rainer) have mentioned. What do you think?

I like it too.
Also, I may or may not borrow from the chains idea I already mentioned for an RPG I may make somtime in the future. Seeing as the idea was basically borrowed from Rainer Deyke I hope he doesn't mind me using something based on it. _________________ Some may know me as MidnightDreamer... time for a namechange.

I think that's a good idea.
For a setting I'd seriously suggest bronze age or earlier. Not only because civilization would have to be somewhat nomadic (or just on the dawn of urbanization and fortified towns) due to the moving "dragons" but I also prefer it because from a thematic perspective the world would seem more vast and untamed than in a medieval setting. Also the significance of the ziggarut in ancient times was as a platform to house the cities patron god, I'd like to see that brought into play but in a literal sense. _________________ That's not a broken link, it's a PICTURE of a broken link. I was thinking along Sumerian/Babylonian lines myself. Bronze age rocks.
Interesting factoid: there is evidence that before people learned to smelt iron, they already worked iron if they could find it in a metallic state. However, the only natural metallic iron on earth is in meteors. Iron was therefore known as the star metal, rarer and more valuable than gold.

I'm probably not motivated enough to actually make a game for this. However, it's a cool idea, so I thought I'd throw in something of my own.
The dragon idea is rather nice. But I think the humans that have lived around dragons that are lazy and don't like to move around (or the humans that have captured their dragon) should be more technologically advance then the ones around more restless ones. And I think there should be at least one race who has learned to live on their own (which could make them be in, say, the industrial revolution stage?).
Yeah. Cool idea.
