Why do my posts end up erupting into flamewars? If I'm trolling, it's entirely subliminal, so let me know if I am, or if it's just bad luck.

that's because RPGDX is going through thesame growing pains as teh GDR did. It's being clogged with assholes who post flames to legitemate topics. Makes me think about random bannings....but I'm no longer in charge here.

Bannings never did anything to keep GDR from dying. Weren't you, Mandrake, even banned at one point?

Your (semi-) popular BBS is going to have trolls. They're like bridges, in that respect. It really isn't that hard to put on blinders to "offensive" material. (That isn't to say that said material is justified; it is just to say that it is something that can be tolerated.)

Personally I feel that this board could use some more moderator intervention. Not necessarily banning or post removal, but occasional reminders to keep it civil. Most people here don't want to start flamewars, they just overreact and lose their tempers. I speak from experience when I say that it's possible to have a more civil atmosphere on a message board with this level of traffic.

I do find Mandrake's post ironic, since the only unprovoked flame on RPGDX that I can recall was posted by Mandrake (although there were probably more that I've forgotten and many more border cases). I think we're all blinded by our own biases to some extend, which is exactly why intervention by a neutral unbiased moderator would be useful. Of course this depends on the moderators staying neutral and unbiased, which may be an unreasonable expectation.

what? when?

and also- in recent memory, the post xmark is talking about is probably the MOST unprovoked flame I've ever seen. He asked people if anyone needed help with their projects (ie: doing music) and people insulted him. Which, IMHO, extremely unprovoked.

The "conversations in rpgs" thread, in response to Mr Frosty. I can't find the specific post, either in that thread or in the split-off thread "Old relations heat up, indie-games and indie-movies, etc.". Maybe it was deleted. Or maybe I'm just confused, and thinking of Happy's post (which was also an appearently unprovoked flame).

I had forgotten about that one. I agree that it qualifies as an unprovoked flame.

hmmm... can't tell if it's sarcasm or not, so no response.

To be fair, I don't really think that I was flamed in my music post. Just some criticism of my songs, that's all. I was mostly talking about the flame wars between other people that start in my posts :)

I think that one you posted xmark about music was horrible... not in that they rated your stuff.. but that no one said yes or no but went on about some off topic issue.

Does there really need to be something like a code of conduct? I would like to think we are mature enough just to let small issues pass.

We all have bad days, and maybe either react to something we read or maybe post something that is bound to cause someone else to react in a negative way. I do agree that maybe small warnings from the modarators that a thread is pushing the boundaries of common decency could help.
