I know it's shit and all, but I have to start it for school, and I want to know what the best IDE is. J2ME, JCreator... what? Oh, and something free, too.

Java actually is not all that bad. Once you get used to the entire oop/everything is a class thing, its actually quiet simple and easy to get results fast. It even has built in support for gfx and sound. My two main dislikes about Java:

1. The lag at startup when the JRE loads gives the impression of slowness.

2. File io is a pain in the ass.

J2ME isn't an ide, thats the sdk for mobile devices. I've been using JCreater lately and its very nice, and free. The only thing I don't like about it is the help dialogue always stays on top in the way. Too use JCreater you must download the 1.4 sdk and docs from sun. Its all free as in no charge.

buy a copy of ultra edit. It will work with everything and anything. And it's worth the 32 bucks or so you would have to pay for it.

Or, if you're running a Linux distro, you could just forsake IDEs altogether and just use emacs or vi.

You don't need Linux for that! I do all of my editing in gvim on a Windows box.

Aye, you don't. But support for gnu tools in windows isn't necessarily wonderful.

I'd say Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org) or Jext(http://www.jext.org)

I would have to agree with Janus. In my grade 11 programming class 2 years ago I used JCreator and it was pretty damn good.
