Chrono Cross is completely different, it just features the passage through time, so ya. (Same SORT of battle system [you can see and avoid enemies, but there's a transition to a battle screen])

I've been Chrono Trigger 23 times. Chrono is level 92 :P (New game +)
Chrono Cross is actually a CT sequel; the storyline is just so obtuse and complicated that the connection isn't obvious unless you beat it.

To basically summarize what I understand of the plot, the entirety of CC takes place in an area off the coast of Porre (the city from CT), that is located in a parallel universe that was created when Lavos was destroyed. Or something like that, it's been a while since I played CC. It's a good story, but it's way too complex for a video game.

CC's art and music were the main kickers for me. The art and music were outstanding. The story and character designs? Notsomuch.

I don't think CC's plot was too complex or obfuscated. Compared to Xenogears, where you have absolutely no idea what's going on until you hit late-game, CC's is clear as crystal. Course, most of the plots that Square has come out with over the past decade have tended towards (potential) complexity—one could say that complexity is what they are good at.

The character designs were really good, too. Especially the Marilyn Manson rip-off, Nikki. While the characters' renderings are a bit old by today's standards, each character felt distinct to me.

Course, the game was not without it's flaws; but, what game isn't?
