I think the most important point to remember is that nobody codes the same way. Like you said, C++ programmers feel they should manage memory. LISP programmers feel the shouldn't manage memory. Yet both languages are very solid and perform stunningly well for what they're intended. Hmm.

Throw a ninja at sea and he'll flip out and drown. Throw a pirate in the middle of a feudal war and he'll be cut down. To each their territory. The end result is what matters. :)

Yes, I'm actually a bit tired of language fights. There are lots of languages, each has it's pros and cons. There usually is no "best" langauge.

The only thing to do is make a list of features that you want/need from your language and then check which of the available programming languages fit best - the list can include points like "Must be well known to me" :)

Ah, well, with such a lot of reason this discussion will end way too soon to entertain me for some more days ;)

I use both. If I need rapid, stable development without raw speed (don't forget instant portability), I choose Java. If I need raw speed and power, I choose C/C++.

Personally, I use Visual Basic for the quick and dirty stuff. It's a RAD, so it's ideal for developement tools where production speed is more important than performance.

For serious projects, I use C++ and break out the heavy duty APIs. :P

Typically I'll combine the two, using VB to generate a few quick and dirty editors to avoid working directly with hex and C++ to code the actual project. Works great and yields good results in little to no time. :)
