Funny thing is, this guy's questions kind of inspired me to take another crack at Diver Down (last time I got stuck after I rescued the dude from the castle and he joined my team).
I think I might write a walkthrough for it too, just for the hell of it :) _________________ Mark Hall

on www.verge-rpg.com, there is a thread in the General Discussion forum called 'Diver Down on GameHippo.com'. There are two walkthrough's listed therein, but none of them are near finished. It might help get you started, though.
A complete walkthrough would be nice! _________________ Diver Down

I haven't played Diver Down since the very first release on Verge1. It kicked ass as I remember. _________________ Guile says: Go home and be a family man.

gah...
I downloaded this 20mb monstrosity, and it doesn't even run.
I checked the cfg file,
Code: |
startmap start.map
xres 640
yres 480
appname Diver Down diverdown.grenideer.com
log 1
windowmode 1
eagle 1
idspispopd 1
arraycheck 1
paranoid 0
mount1 g.vrg
mount2 s.vrg
mount3 m.vrg
mount4 t.vrg
mount5 c.vrg
mount6 v.vrg
mount7 x.vrg
end
|
and the log file,
Code: |
Initializing VC interpreter
system vclib init: 621 funcs, 166 ints (25512 bytes), 25 strings
start.map: mapevents 1, codesize 265
--> VC opened file new.dds, ptr 0x00B4E2B8
--> VC closed file ptr 0x00B4E2B8
|
and I can't figure out what's wrong. :\
Any help? I want to see what the fuss over this game is all about.
{edit}
hmm, question:
Can Diver Down run without sound? I don't have a sound card.

Dude, you should play Diver Down then, man! I'm happy with a lot of the fuss! DD was the highest rated game on RPGDX until the last review a few days ago. It seems if you're into story and old-school rpgs, you'll love it, but if you really want graphics or innovative gameplay, you won't necessarily like it.
Umm, there is a sound option, but I don't remember what it is offhand (I'll need to check when I get home). But you should be able to run the game without sound with soundmode 3 (or whatever the option is).
What OS do you have, which version did you download, and from what website?
The reason I ask is because eagle mode should not be set to 1. Also, I can't believe I left arraycheck and logging on, but that was my fault. Turning arraycheck off might cause unintended weirdness. _________________ Diver Down

Windows 2000 Professional.
Whatever version is latest.
Your website.
the options in the cfg are not set to what they were when I downloaded it.
I played with them a bit, to try to get it to run.
It didn't run when I first downloaded, so I was trying to figure it out. _________________ Principal Software Architect

you can try sound_device 3 which is no sound. The reason I asked which version is because there is a DOS and Win version, but I assume you got the win.
BUT, the bad news is, Win 2k is not really supported. It might work, but it might not. I don't know. Win 9x and WinXP were all I could test with.
But in my defense I *did* put that info on the download page. Sorry if you wasted your time downloading 20 megs. _________________ Diver Down

I got Win2K and it seems to be working well so far. _________________ Mark Hall

I'd tried Diver Down multiple times before, as I remember, but VERGE is always unreliable (yes, I'm sorry to say but it usually is :/) _________________ Guile says: Go home and be a family man.

So you tried DD multiple times and it wouldn't run? I do agree that the winv2 engine wasn't as polished as it could've been, since it was basically finished to release this game. Verge 3 is not complete yet, but useable and already hella better. _________________ Diver Down

I added sound_device 3 to the cfg file, and still no change.
Oh, I doubt it would help, but here is the message I get from windows after clicking the exe:
The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". _________________ Principal Software Architect

Ya, sorry, that's pretty weird. Well, Xmark, did you use the DOS or the Windows version? The only other thing I could think of is maybe try using a Dos emulator with the Dos version, but honestly that sounds a little sketchy.
I don't think you'll be able to reliably play unless you have win9x or XP. Not sure what's different about your OS and Xmark's - you may wanna compare systems and game versions. _________________ Diver Down

I'm using the windows version, and it's actually working on my Win2k professional system much better than either version ever worked on my old win98 system. Hasn't crashed out once yet. _________________ Mark Hall
