Heh, I'm glad you think so. :-) I joined that project three months ago when ElvenProgrammer posted about it here, and I haven't regretted it still, even though the discussions about certain aspects of the game can get pretty hot, like about using XML or not, how to do network communication or what combat style to use.

Since I joined I feel like the complete engine has basically been rewritten except for network and combat areas. We switched the client over from Allegro to SDL, and also added an OpenGL backend. At the same time transforming the engine from a lot of C-style code to an object oriented approach. Funny thing is that the only visible difference between then and now are some of the graphics that have changed, plus some seamingly minor functionalities. I think though, that the refactoring has been quite a necessary step in the development.

Well I noticed you on the TMW forums first. It's kind of old news now that, yes, we can use a writer. :-)

Hi, the news for "The mana world" include some information about an "open source Ragnarok Online". I found a obviously commercial game called Ragnarok Online. It's looking pretty nice, but I'm not sure if it's the one that you mentioned?

Can you give an link to the game that you mean, just to be sure I looked at the right thing? Thanks :)

It is most likely that game they mean.

Does anybody know if Myung-Jin Lee has quit his manwha writing and only is working on the online-game? I have the first ten volumes and if he still makes Ragnarok, tokyopop works slow. Very slow.

Ok, that's the one I found. Didn't see anything about open source, but some very restrictive rules on running a server (= noone may run a server without explicit permission).

Somehow it didn't seem to fit the "open/free" idea of open source.

Hmm well I haven't said Ragnarok Online (RO) is open source, just The Mana World is. Further more at the moment we're using eAthena, an open source RO server emulator, until our own server is ready which is currently in design phase.

I see. Sorry for misreading the text.

I'm looking forward to "The mana world". Lately I tried a few (M)MO(RP)Gs and liked them very much.

Guys, I've got just one thing to say about any free-wheeling, open-source MMORPG:

DEMOCRACY.

If you're talking about in game, don't some mmorpg's have a sort of pseudo-democracy? I think everquest (or something equally famous) has in-guild elections and stuff. Guild Wars will almost certainly have something similar.

Oh, and I also agree with the original poster that Mana World is looking very sweet, heh. I can't try it out thanks to restrictive uni internet access though, but i'll definitely be giving it a whirl as soon as I get home.

I don't mean that, really.

When I was a Graal player, I worked with this group called the PLC, that emerged because a bunch of adolescents were running the game like a third world country, so to speak. It would have acted like a parliament had it succeeded, but the admins wanted to run the game like a business (which it later became, if mediocre ....legendarily mediocre *snicker*) and they felt that the players would only elect people to positions who weren't suitable for the job.

I admit that I'm biased against Graal because it spread rumors that people could run their own servers with the game to promote its popularity (because the central server was constantly getting hacked and overburdened) and then when the game got popular -- in a sense, anyway -- they changed their terms of service agreements and shut all the non-affiliated servers down in a legal, but certainly underhanded, fashion.

I'd like to see it happen, a game run by people for people.

Yeah, we can't have those filthy robots running games for people. Down with the Robot Bourgeoisie!

Bjorn, I'm still not sure if I read the text correctly.

I think to understand that you plan to build a MMOG Server yourself? I'm interested in this topic, I'm pondering about expanding H-World with MOG functions.

How does usch a server core work? I mean the network stuff must handle conections to (possibly) a few thousand clients, yet handle all input in near-realtime.

How is this done? How is such a server core built usually?

I'm sorry for the imprecise answers, but I know so little about thsi that I can't even ask precisely.

My background (I hope this will help you to answer my questions on a useful level): I know how to use sockets. I have a little knowledge about networking basics, like datagrams vs. connection oriented protocols. But I don't have much practise with that stuff.
