That fundamentalist Christian is the best idea for a videogame enemy I've ever seen. Kudos, CH.

white_door's sprite reminds me of the medusas from Final Fantasy.

Meh, maybe this is cheating but here's the sprite of one of Endless Saga's characters.

RuneLancer: a bit of cheating I think but great pixelart anyway ;).
Locrian: Your goblin is awesome. Me like.

I am myself working on a enemysprite that'll be finished... well, soon. And I better find that everybody knows who it is when I put it up :).

Meh, here are a few more Endless Saga sprites. Fresh from the sprite oven.

Not too shabby for programmer art, I guess. >"<

I like that your sprites have a unique style.

That's because I draw them in a somewhat unique way.

I'm no artist. I can manage with 16x24 sprites. Unfortunately, it quickly became obvious that this resolution is unconceivable for a project like Endless Saga (being 3D.) Too small. Horribly pixelated no matter how much I try to filter them. But drawing 32x48 is something I can't do.

The solution? I draw at 16x24 and scale them up to 32x48 manually by fixing up a 2x scaled version, adding intermediate colors, and touching up until I'm satisfied with the results.

The original 16x24 sprites are drawn with a style closely ressembling that of FF6, which is rather easy to mimic. I posted something about that a little while back (the birth of a sprite)...

You've gotten very good at drawing those.... I like the interim version better than the final though. It seems more detailed, less conforming. Plus there is the reality of information loss between the starting sprite and the final version.

I think it's because at lower resolutions, the pixel art implies more detail than it actually has. That's why old-school sprites look so cool: because the artists did so well within the limitations of their hardware.

Bumping up the resolution demands a similar rise in detail for the eye, which is why the final version looks less detailed, even though there has technically been no 'loss' of detail at all in the conversion process.

Those sprites are still pretty cool.

Thanks everyone, that's real flattering. :D It may not be professional-level stuff, but hey, an indie game's an indie game.

About the level of detail, I agree that pixelated means stimulating the viewer's imagination more. Let's face it, you're the one filling in the blanks in these situations (or rather your imagination is) so the more that's left up to your imagination, the more interesting the result. :P

However, even at 640x480, these look really bad when 16x24 because they get even more stretched. But 32x48 only looks mildly pixelated, which brings us back to the whole pixelated = imagination-stimulator thing. ;)

(Edit: Having posted, I just remembered this gif was actually when I was still using 16x24 sprites. D'oh. But this is at half scale anyhow, so it evens out...)

Anyways, I don't mean to hijack the thread; anyone else gonna post some sprites? :D Great stuff so far; I rather liked the goblin Locrian posted; very nice. Highly detailled and with a very cool color scheme (#2's my favorite one.) I rather like how the club has a "wood" pattern instead of the lazy "shaded uniform" look these things usually have.
