I've started thinking about what I'm doing for the side scroller compo, and also just starting to prepare some side-scroller tech. I'll be using this thread to post about the progress as I go along.
What I'm thinking of doing is more like a sidescrolling action game than a real RPG, but I'd like to try and get some proper RPG elements in there, and some form of story too.
It was actually reading RampantCoyotes blog which gave me the idea, from the mention of Golden Axe:
But I think I'll be drawing even more inspiration from Barbarian 2:

Sounds like it will be a fun game.
I always enjoyed Golden Axe and recently played it for several hours when I got Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360.

Yay, got a 4-layer parallax system working, with some basic movement back/forth. Next on to making a simple built-in editor, so I can make levels :D This is FUN. _________________ www.mattiasgustavsson.com - My blog

Got the basic built-in editor working now, along with level load/save. Will finish it off with some extra stuff first thing tomorrow, then go on to actually start working on the game. I'm going to be re-using as much art as I can for this one (which means just rendering out characters and stuff which I've already put together for other projects :D) _________________ www.mattiasgustavsson.com - My blog

Sounds like a solid plan. The Poser characters you previously created were top-notch. I'm looking forward to seeing the game.

Been doing lots of rendering and art stuff now (I hate working with placeholder art), coding player movement stuff on my laptop while waiting for renders to finish. It's coming along quite nicely. Will probably spend most of today just getting the elements in (scenery, npc's, player movement, AI etc) and tomorrow making the more game specific stuff (story, dialogue etc).
This is going to be tight, I've aimed way to high. But I ain't backing down now! _________________ www.mattiasgustavsson.com - My blog

Hey, I recognize the Water Elemental model in your first screenshot. :) I've used that model before, during the Two Lords project...it's a pretty cool figure. :) That sword graphic looks very familiar too but I can't quite think of which one it is...I know I have it in my library also though...I recognize the side blades. :) _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices.
