PostPosted: Fri Aug 06, 2010 9:24 pm    Post subject: [Alternate History] - Dwarven Commando [quote]

So, I wasn't really going to do a game for this one, as I really didn't have any ideas for it - but it seems like I might be making one anyway (well, two actually, as I'm making some art for the Multi-dimensional Man as well).

It is quite a stretch to make it fit the "Alternate History" theme though, and no stretching will make it an RPG, but I'm making it anyway :P

I'm doing a remake of this one:

It is Commando on the C64 - a true classic :-) Mine will be done in a Fantasy setting though, and you'll control a dwarf rather than a soldier.

I got the idea when talking to Dock the other day - all because of a misunderstanding about the game Commandos and the game Commando :P

We'll see how it goes - I haven't started yet, but I'll keep you guys posted.

Sounds cool man. It could be an interesting idea even if it's not going to be an RPG. Commando was a fun game. ^^

I'm playing around with some graphics for this - so far, everything I've used is re-used from other projects I've done:

Haha, awesome - misunderstandings make for the best inspiration, I'm glad to have played my part in this!

We did a top-down fantasy 2D game at my old job once, that was a lot of fun, but it ended up being more gauntlet than anything. Will you go with projectiles? Keeping it nice and linear?

Cool concept, and I like that it's going to bend the definition of RPG. However I have one question, did the original game scroll vertically or horizontally?

Vertically - and mine will do that too :-)
There's a video of the original here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDAhixO2t5w
and I'm going to try and stay reasonably close to it, if I can.

I've been doing more sprites for it:

and I started the coding last night

Progress haven't been quite as rapid as I would have liked... I have the player character on screen, along with some objects, you can move around in all directions, the screen scrolls and you collide with objects. You can also throw axes (which also gets blocked by objects).

Next step is adding some more objects to the level, and then the enemy goblins :-)

I've been slacking off too much on this one - have enemies spawning, but not moving around yet :P I don't think I'll get this done for tonight, but I'll post what I have anyway.

Also, I actually do want to finish this to some level at least - so I'll keep going with it for the next week or so :-)

Ok, this is far from being a game at this point - you can walk around and fire, and that's it. No enemies yet.

I will continue on this one though - would like to make it actually playable :-)

It looks good so far :)

Also I walked to the end throwing axes, until I got to the bit where the background wasn't being drawn to clear the screen and it made me think more games should use the effect you get when you don't draw the background.

Graphics is surprisingly good. Have been playing in for several months, and made progress :)

I was just thinking, how awful would it not be if that guy wasn't actually a spambot, but someone who actually had spent months playing half a walk-around demo :-O AND considered themselves making progress :D funny, and a bit sad :-)
