This isn't RPG related.......YET!
I'm going to use this particle system in my battle engine....
so don't go telling me about posting non-rpg stuff :)
Particle System Demo
- Built using C++ and DirectX 8.0
- Around 50KB download
- rename *_flare.bmp to flare.bmp one at a time to see different effects when running the executable.

I'm on my crappy computer right now since my brother's friend is sleeping in the computer room, but does that engine use point sprites or does it just make polygons and texture the particle on there?

That looked nice. I've created a new flare type, suggested by Modanung, shown below:
It gives a real nice effect.

Man, particle textures should be 32*32 or 64*64 at the most.

Not the high detail ones.
UT2003, also uses about this size for its particles.

Then it mipmaps them for speed purposes.

Or a flashlight shining on the floor or against a wall... lol. It was actually just meant to be a blob. Have you seen what it does in the particle engine? :-)

I don't think it looks like a flashlight at all... those are yellow, right?
I looks like a height map of a cone to me.

Jeez, you people and your imaginations, am I the only one who thinks it just looks like someone made a circular gradient fill with a slight edge pad in photoshop? It doesn't look like anything more than that to me.
Not that flares need to be works of art.

Ok, the engine uses polygons that are textured with the flare.bmp
It supports up to 50K particles with an FPS of 64 frames per second.
The texture size can be up to 256*256
(maybe larger but it will drop the fps considerably)
I'm working on making an interactive demo of the engine..
which will allow you to see all the effects that are preprogrammed
and also allow you to create your own effects.
I _might_ release the code later.. but for now, I wont.
I'll get back to you all later..It's time for a meeting here in the office. _________________ Principal Software Architect
