If you see a topic that you think will make you mad and start a flame war, don't reply, or better yet, don't look at that topic anymore. If there was something interesting in the thread that you'd like to talk about, but would rather avoid the offensive topic, just start your own thread. Really, a moderator would much rather see threads about similar things than one thread with a flame war.
I have participated in flame wars in the past, and I regret it. Really, what does it get you? Say you're somewhere in Oregon. Does it really matter that you HAVE to show someone in Sweden your point of view (in a rude way, I might add), so they can disregard it and still have the same views? No, it doesn't. Flame wars have one point - getting everyone mad at each other. This is an RPG development forum, not a "Let's piss some people off today" forum.
I don't have mod status, but I certainly do have logic.
P.S.
Don't respond to this, just nod. I don't want THIS thread to turn into some flame war about "tickle me elmo", or something completely off topic like that.

You disgusting perv! I don't want to tickle your elmo! Gawd.
And flaming is teh fun! I think it's cathartic; if we didn't get out negative emotions (even if they don't produce, as you say, any lasting results), then we would all be a whole lot more negative, savvy?
Let the trolls have their holy-wars, I say. Except Dunric. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

Here is not the place for flaming. End of discussion.

And I say you are taking this to a totalitarian extreme. Since when were you given mod status to declare no flame wars? Heated discussion--even pointless mudslinging--is part of civilized society. Declaring a moratorium on flame wars isn't going to solve anything. Sure, flame wars aren't pretty, but that's the point: as long as it isn't taken to a Dunric extreme, it should be permissible. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

If it was Mandrake who closed the "Who plans on becoming a preofessional" thread, adding in your point of view/arguments in the last post before closing was really tactless. Applying a GDNet-like "If I participate, I don't moderate" policy would have been better IMO. _________________ http://www.weeaboo.se

- There's a difference between a flame war and a discussion. Mandrake and I were discussing. We were doing so in a civilized fashion. The Flames started when Happy interjected a fruitless comment, and last I checked (at 5am this morning, EST, that was the last comment in the thread before it was locked. Mandrake's was added afterwards). _________________ - Jaeda

I for one completely support everyone's inalienable right to start controversial and heated discussions that are completely off the topic of the thread at hand and carry them to the extent that the original, innocuous thread gets locked.
*cough*

It's heartening to see the way this was handled in any case. Big difference between instant banning and deleting any references to an "incident" and simply locking and relocating it.

I feel that splitting the hijacked topic into two distinct threads was a great boon for everyone. I, for one, was not finished discussing the OT, and didn't want to post something that would seem outright non sequitur given the number of posts totally unrelated to professional game development.
Moderation is a valuable tool; it should be used, but properly.

I'm not quite sure if you mean I used them right or wrong, but I just tried my best option. Some posts winded up wrongly, and I apologize for that. And I think some posts where related to both topics.

If you mean "person" instead of "purpose", you might be referring to me, as I feel this forum is quite mine to dictate as I see fit. Any objections? ;-)
(if there seriously are objections, please just talk about it)

heh, might as well admit it was me who locked the topic in the first place. I saw Happy's insult and was like "ooh, looks like trouble" and I locked it. _________________ Mark Hall

naw i think people mean me...i think they thought i locked the thread to 'win' the arguement. I haven't moderated in a while, mainly because i think that the other forum moderators are doing their job excellently and so far have not needed my help. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

I noticed one thing: whenever there's a flame war all of a sudden we get a lot more traffic on the boards. Maybe someone should start a flame war on my stagnant messageboard :) (actually, I'm just kidding, please don't) _________________ Mark Hall
